Top 5 Things We Learned in Austin for Community Pharmacy Owners

Posted by Benjamin Coakley on Wed, Oct 29, 2014 @ 08:44 AM

Traveling to trade shows is a pleasant experience for our team at Waypoint because it allows us to Community Pharmacy Ownersee many of the new ideas in the pharmacy world as well as travel to many new exciting destinations.  The NCPA Annual Convention typically is the place where all these ideas culminate in one place at one time. These ideas are all designed to help the community pharmacy owner. The 2014 Convention in Austin far exceeded our expectations.

We have put together a list of the top 5 things that we learned in Austin that can help all community pharmacy owners.

  1. Time Management is Important - there was tremendous interest in managing time more effectively.  We did a poll while we were there and the number one concern for pharmacy owners was not having enough time for the important things outside the pharmacy.  To reinforce this even further, it was standing room only at the Colleagues in Consultation Session on time management.  Please see a previous blog about time management.
  2. Positivity is a key to success in community pharmacy - another important theme of the show was inspiring positivity into the community pharmacy world.  This means having a positive attitude as the owner, inspiring positivity in your employees and getting buy in from your patients that you are making a positive difference in the communities you serve. There was standing room only for the Colleagues in Consultation Session on this topic as well.  Please visit the Positively Pharmacist website for great information on how to inspire more positivity.
  3. Pharmacy security is vital for success - one of the coolest products we saw in Austin was the Smoke Cloak system from Smoke Systems.  In our opinion, as these things become more popular, they will deter people from committing crimes against your pharmacy.  Google Smoke Cloak and you will see all the cool things that this system can do for your pharmacy.  If you want the contact to their sales person, please respond to this blog or send me an email.
  4. Focus on Medicare - it's no secret that the population is getting older.  I saw a projection this weekend that over 70 Million people will be 65 years or older in just 16 years.  Understanding Medicare and using technology can help set you apart from other pharmacies.  Companies like iMedicare are starting to pop up because of this critical need in the marketplace.
  5. Adherence is important - this topic is like the dead horse that continues to be beat over and over again.  However, we started to see companies that have been in the market place for many years start to position their products and services as adherence friendly.  I would encourage all pharmacy owners and managers to discuss with your current service providers how their offerings can help with adherence.

So, where do you start with all this information.  If you would like to discuss time management or the Positively Pharmacist Project, please just email us at info@waypointus.com or fill out a form and we will get back to you.  If you would like to start tackling these things on your own, I would encourage you start by blocking out a couple of hours in your calendar to evaluate the ideas above.  If you don't block it out, the odds are you will never get to them because the pharmacy demands so much of you time and energy.

Why do we do what we do?

Our mission is to help independent community pharmacy owners achieve all their goals and dreams, inside, outside and after their life in pharmacy. In doing so, we are helping independent community pharmacies remain independent and thrive for many years to come.

When a pharmacist reaches out to us for information and help, we give them as much free value as possible. In addition to providing educational, self-assessment and strategic planning tools, we invite qualified pharmacists into our formal discovery process.

The first step of the process is completing The Inspired Goals Workshop. This complimentary and private 90-minute session enables us to deliver a free, detailed and personal Inspired Independence Blueprint. The blueprint provides a roadmap for achieving your goals and enables you to fully understand the value of joining The Inspired Independence Program.

If you wish to learn more about any aspect of our work, the free value we offer, or to be considered for The Inspired Goals Workshop, visit our web site at www.waypointus.com or call 843.873.4420 and ask for Ben or Matt Coakley.

At Waypoint Pharmacist Advisors, we take care of you!
