Although different for everyone, some moments and decisions can alter your life path forever. In pharmacy, one might consider obtaining a degree, getting a new job, quitting a job, deciding to become an owner, and retirement to be turning points. Some events are random and cannot be controlled; others are more calculated and planned.
A small amount of planning goes a long way. It might have taken me the better part of thirty some years to figure that out, but it is the single most effective thing I have learned for meeting goals. Starting with a list of short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals, one can figure out what is important to them and recognize future events that will be life changing. Short-term goals help you reach mid-term goals, which help you reach long-term goals. While we can’t control everything, we can control whether or not we plan. When talking and developing personal goals with pharmacy owners, one life altering event typically involved is life after pharmacy. I have met and worked with many owners who have a goal to “accumulate enough wealth to retire on my terms.” That is a wonderful goal, and it is important to reach it. So what is the plan?
While few have cracked the code to planning what happens to their pharmacy and themselves at retirement, for the majority, the plan is “I need to plan”. Deciding to take control and plan is a very empowering defining moment in a person’s life. It is inspiring. By setting goals, taking the time to plan, and achieving them, one grows in confidence, pride, and success.
