Some scientists spend their whole life searching the cosmos for the existence
of life. They spend countless hours gazing through telescopes or listening for radio signals from galaxies light years away. They push themselves to the limits of their entire being all because they believe it actually exists. I bet you think I am writing about extraterrestrial life.
I am actually writing about one of the most mythical things in our world: Life After Pharmacy.
"Once a pharmacist, always a pharmacist" is something we hear routinely as we travel this great nation working with pharmacists and community pharmacy owners. We then ask the question "Why is this?" The answer we typically hear is something like this: "We didn't know there was such a thing as life after pharmacy."
This answer confirms what we believe about the community pharmacy world. Most pharmacists and pharmacy owners do not understand life after pharmacy, and therefore, do not know it actually exists. Yes, life after pharmacy actually exists. But (oh no, not that dreaded "b" word), there are some caveats that make it necessary to have a plan for it. Below are two untold truths about life after pharmacy.
- Life after pharmacy must be planned for or it may never be attained.
- It's better to start early in your pharmacy career, however, it is never too late.
There are tremendous benefits of life after pharmacy. Most of the time, we hear that life after pharmacy allows the select few that achieve it the freedom to do the things they have always wanted to do. This seems like a worthy objective for all pharmacists and pharmacy owners. Being adequately prepared for life after pharmacy can also give your pharmacy a greater chance to succeed to the next generation. If these are things that you think you want to achieve, then you need to step up to meet this challenge sooner rather than later (See number 2 above).
